Nanomechanics and Thermal Properties

AM-FM Viscoelastic Mapping Mode

MFP-3D / MFP-3D Origin

AM-FM mode combines the features and benefits of normal tapping mode with Frequency Modulation (FM) mode. Normal tapping mode provides non-invasive, high-resolution topographical imaging while the second mode drive frequency is adjusted to keep it on resonance. The second mode resonance is a sensitive measure of the tip-sample interaction, and can be used with appropriate mechanical models to quantitatively estimate both the elastic and loss moduli of the material and the tip-sample dissipation.

Nanoindentation

MFP-3D Only

The NanoIndenter Option enables true instrumented nanoindention for quantitative measurements with the highest accuracy. Two force ranges are available: Standard (maximum load 20mN, noise floor 75nN) and Low Force (maximum load 4mN, noise floor 15nN).

Contact Resonance Viscoelastic Mapping Mode

MFP-3D Only

The Contact Resonance option provides wide-band, frequency-independent excitation of the sample, enabling a variety of contact resonance techniques. With exclusive Asylum modes like Dual AC™ Resonance Tracking (DART) and Band Excitation, these methods allow quantitative mapping of material properties including both elasticity and viscoelastic damping.

Ztherm Modulated Thermal Analysis

MFP-3D Only

Ztherm™ provides the most sensitive and highest resolution thermal analysis available. It uses patent-pending cantilever drift compensation and novel measurement techniques to provide highly localized heating with unprecedented sensitivity to material property changes in sub-zeptoliter volumes (<10-22 L). Scanning Thermal Microscopy (SThM) with microfabricated silicon probes is also available for temperature and thermal conductivity measurements with higher resolution than conventional Wollaston-wire probes.

These conditions are essential for a growing number of applications in energy generation and energy storage research and beyond. Our fully integrated glovebox solutions are engineered to deliver maximum usability and performance. Contact us to learn about standard configurations or to tailor one to your specific needs.

Operating in Liquid Environments

Closed Fluid Cell

MFP-3D / MFP-3D Origin

The Closed Fluid Cell provides a sealed chamber with ten inlet and outlet ports for the exchange of liquid or gas in an otherwise sealed environment. The kit includes various sample accessories, as well as a membrane and clamp for sealed operation.  Also available in an economical “Fluid Cell Lite” version without inlet/outlet ports that minimizes evaporation but is not completely sealed.

The kit includes an assortment of Petri dishes, a membrane that minimizes evaporation, and a magnetic clamp to secure the dish to the sample plate. The Petri Dish Holder is a basic, non-heated version.

iDrive

MFP-3D / MFP-3D Origin

The iDrive™ cantilever holder simplifies imaging in fluid, especially for soft samples. The amplitude of mechanical resonance peaks normally associated with fluid imaging are eliminated which allows for easy auto-tuning of the cantilever in fluid for AC, Dual AC, and Phase Imaging.

MicroFlow Cell

MFP-3D / MFP-3D Origin

The MicroFlow Cell is similar to the standard MFP-3D cantilever holder but includes fluid exchange ports which can be used to exchange the liquid in a small volume around the probe.

Applying Additional External Driving Forces

Variable Field Module

MFP-3D Only

The Variable Field Module (VFM2) is ideal for magnetic force microscopy and other applications where the sample has a dependence on the applied magnetic field. The VFM2 can apply in-plane magnetic fields of more than ±0.8 Tesla (8,000G) and offers ~1G field resolution. Unlike competing designs, it uses permanent magnets to avoid heating and associated drift.

NanoRack™ Sample Stretching Stage

MFP-3D Only

Extract new information from your samples with the NanoRack™. This unique sample stage applies symmetric tensile or compressive loading to samples about a central area that can be simultaneously observed with the AFM. The stage features a large range to achieve high strains and an integrated load cell to measure high stresses with forces up to 80N.
