Atomic resolution STM on MFP-3D with standard and extended Z heads

HOPG imaged on the MFP-3D using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Both images are unfiltered current images and clearly resolve the HOPG lattice. The image taken with a standard 15µm MFP-3D Z head (left) is clearly better than the one taken on an extended (40µm) Z range MFP-3D head (right), though it is remarkable that atomic resolution is still possible at this quality with the extended Z head. Both images are 5nm scans.

Some biological applications, especially those looking at cell adhesion or very tall cells, require a very large Z range. The Asylum Research extended Z head is unique in that it can provide this range and yet still provide very high resolution imaging without changing to a different Z scanner.
