Spatially resolved force spectroscopy of bacteria

Description

Sample force volume data obtained from the interaction of the AFM tip with the bacterium Shewanella putrefaciens. (a) Map of zero-force height values obtained from the analysis of each force curve generated by the force volume method using a 10x10 grid. The numbered regions correspond to positions at which the sample force profiles (b) measured on approach (compression) and retract (decompression) were obtained: (i) the substrate, (ii) the bacterial cell periphery, (iii) the bacterial cell apex, and (iv) the substrate. Each approach force profile has been analysed to extract the zero-force heights. The corresponding piezo displacements are indicated by the arrows.
