As a postdoc with our company, you will use the latest SPM technology to investigate a variety of physical problems on the sub-micrometer level, including:

The Candidate

Successful candidates must have:

Research and Development Scientist - Santa Barbara, CA

Asylum Research, an Oxford Instruments Company and the technology leader in atomic force and scanning probe microscopy is seeking a highly skilled and innovative physicist to join our research and development group in Santa Barbara, California. Asylum is a part of a successful and rapidly expanding global company, Oxford Instruments plc, a leading provider of high technology tools and systems for industry and research. In this role you will have the opportunity to directly contribute to the development of top quality instrumentation at the cutting edge of AFM and SPM technology in a flexible, fast-paced and collaborative work environment.
 
The Role:

  • Manage product development for AFM instruments and accessories from inception through prototyping and production, and provide technical assistance throughout the product lifecycle (i.e. engineering, marketing, sales, documentation and customer support).
  • Contribute to the design and timely release of exceptional high-performance products.
  • Develop test protocols, algorithms and metrics to test and qualify shipping products.
  • Perform analytical and numerical modelling of key components to support design decisions.
  • Establish new theoretical ground in AFM research, generate new intellectual property in AFM methodology and contribute to long-term planning of future instrument development.
  • Analyze existing patent literature and ensure new technical development IP is protected.
  • Stay abreast of AFM research. Keep current with literature and conferences.
  • Communicate advancements in AFM technology and functionality by training internal sales and applications personnel, publishing application notes and presenting at conferences and trade shows.

The Candidate:
Successful candidates will have:

  • PhD in Physics or closely related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience designing and using scientific instrumentation.
  • Experience with all aspects of AFM operation, design and development.
  • Experience with system-level analysis and troubleshooting for scientific instruments.
  • Proficiency in high-level language programming such as MATLAB, Python, or Igor.
  • Knowledge of signal processing techniques such as FFTs, transfer function estimations, filtering, and lock-in amplifiers.
  • A thorough understanding of fundamental and instrumental noise sources in the context of AFM is preferable.
  • Familiarity with physics modelling software such as COMSOL useful but not required.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and thrive in a largely self-driven environment.
  • Consistent attention to detail and good finishing skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (English).

The Role:
