Optomechanical Technician - Santa Barbara

We are seeking an experienced Optomechanical Technician to join our hardworking production team. This business is part of a successful and rapidly expanding global company, Oxford Instruments plc, a leading provider of high technology tools and systems for industry and research. Located in Santa Barbara, California, Asylum provides a collaborative work environment dedicated to creating innovative instrumentation for nanotechnology customers worldwide.

In this role, you will work closely with our current optics specialist to build precise optomechanical subassemblies and finished products. Additionally, you will inspect incoming parts for quality issues, repair optical components, document build procedures and perform any other necessary duties. Your success in the role will be determined by the quality of your assemblies as well as your production accuracy and efficiency.
 
Successful candidates must have:

  • At least 5 years of experience in optomechanical assembly; AFM assembly a plus.
  • Proficiency in both mechanical assembly and handling/cleaning procedures for precision optics.
  • Excellent manual dexterity with small parts and the ability to deftly use manufacturing tools.
  • Familiarity with mechanical drawings and ability to write and follow specific build instructions.
  • Fluency in English (able to clearly speak, listen, read and write).
  • Commitment to meeting deadlines without compromising quality and providing clear and frequent communication regarding schedules and roadblocks.
  • The ability to clearly discuss technical information with many involved parties including Production, Test, R&D, Engineering and vendor support representatives as needed.

Preferred candidates will also have:

  • Experience with alignment, calibration, firmware and software for board-level cameras.
  • Basic knowledge of optical alignment and optical aberration principles.
  • Familiarity with retroreflectors, autocollimators, test targets and low-power laser sources.
  • The ability to redline mechanical drawings when part modifications are required.
  • Experience and proficiency in electronic and electromechanical assembly.

Physical work environment:

  • Long periods of time working with small precision parts at a seated work station
  • Some assembly done under a stereoscope
  • Occasional lifting of parts weighing up to 60 pounds

The Role
Essential duties of the position include the following:

  • Using C++ and scripting languages, develop software for Windows that controls external
    hardware.
  • Maintain and extend robust high performance disk data streamer.
  • Develop analysis filtering routines that work for both real-time and offline.
  • Work with project team members to produce agreed specifications, develop products that meet
    them, and participate in software design reviews.
  • Keep agreed design and implementation records that allow other software engineers to maintain
    and extend the produced software.
  • Help develop FPGA firmware for external hardware.
  • Contribute to new product introduction projects as appropriate.

The Candidate
A successful candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Physics or Engineering or related field and at least 5 years of experience in software/firmware development
  • Proficiency in Windows programming and Microsoft C++ development tools · Affinity for abstract and highly technical concepts, with an ability to explain complex functionality to customers and other software engineers
  • Maintained knowledge and interest in current software technologies and advancements · DSP or FPGA design experience strongly desired
  • Preference for being guided, not managed
